The Autumn Shipping Market Continues to Recover, With Port Cargo Throughput Climbing Steadily And Showing Robust Vitality

Since the autumn of 2026, global economic and trade exchanges have continued to recover, highlighting the resilience of China’s foreign trade. Major ports across the country have seen a steady rise in shipping activity, with consistent growth in vessel calls, cargo transshipment volumes, and container throughput. Deep-sea trunk routes, domestic feeder lines, and river-sea intermodal services are operating with high efficiency. The port and shipping industry is experiencing a robust trend—characterized by strong supply and demand alongside steady growth—which continues to unleash a powerful momentum for economic recovery.

Key coastal ports are bustling with activity. Major hubs such as the ports of Ningbo-Zhoushan, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Qingdao are operating around the clock. Dozens of ultra-large container ships, bulk carriers, and oil tankers are docking in an orderly fashion, while quay cranes and gantry cranes operate at high speed to ensure seamless coordination between container handling, cargo storage, and logistics transshipment. At the Meishan port area of the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, an average of over 30 ocean-going vessels dock daily. Frequent sailings connect the port to key foreign markets—including Europe, the Americas, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East—as containers laden with home appliances, machinery, new energy products, and light industrial goods are continuously loaded for export. Simultaneously, bulk commodities such as imported ores, crude oil, and grain are being rapidly distributed and transshipped.

Inland waterway transport and river-sea intermodal systems are also accelerating. Shipping traffic along inland waterways—such as the Yangtze River, the Pearl River, and the Grand Canal—continues to climb, with a steady flow of small-to-medium-sized cargo vessels and multi-purpose ships creating vital logistics corridors that link inland regions to the open sea. River-sea intermodal hubs, including the ports of Qinzhou, Suzhou, and Nanjing, are leveraging their strategic locations to strengthen the synergy between inland and coastal ports. By optimizing transshipment processes and enhancing the efficiency of river-sea cargo movement, these hubs are facilitating the rapid export of goods from central and western China, while ensuring the efficient inland transport of materials arriving at the coast. In terms of cargo composition, the mix of goods in the shipping market is undergoing continuous optimization. On the export front, there has been a significant surge in the outbound shipment of high-value-added products—such as new energy vehicles, photovoltaic components, construction machinery, and high-end equipment—which have now become the primary drivers of containerized freight. Regarding imports, the steady inflow of bulk commodities, including energy and mineral resources, grain, and high-end components, provides a robust foundation for domestic industrial production and the safeguarding of public livelihoods. Simultaneously, emerging demand for cross-border e-commerce logistics, cold-chain logistics, and specialized cargo transport continues to expand, prompting the introduction of new, high-quality, and specialized shipping routes at ports.

To ensure efficient operations during the autumn shipping season, major ports and shipping companies have implemented a range of measures to maintain smooth, uninterrupted flow. Ports have optimized vessel scheduling, established "green channels" to accelerate berthing and departure, and reduced the time cargo spends waiting at port. They have also strengthened the inspection and maintenance of equipment to ensure that loading and unloading machinery remains operational around the clock. Furthermore, by streamlining customs clearance—through initiatives such as paperless processing, appointment-based clearance, and expedited inspections—ports have significantly boosted the efficiency of cross-border logistics. Meanwhile, shipping companies have refined their route networks by increasing the frequency of both domestic and international services, adding new deep-sea trunk routes and short-sea feeder lines, and further strengthening their global logistics reach.

Industry analysts point out that, with the continued deepening of global economic and trade cooperation and the ongoing implementation of domestic policies aimed at stabilizing foreign trade, the port and shipping market is expected to maintain its recovery trend through the fourth quarter. Looking ahead, the port sector will continue to enhance operational efficiency, refine service systems, and ensure the seamless flow of logistics chains. By fully leveraging their role as vital hubs for shipping and logistics, ports will help stabilize foreign trade, ensure smooth supply chains, and facilitate the circulation of goods—thereby providing sustained momentum for the high-quality development of the national economy and the advancement of high-level opening-up.
