In the second half of 2026, my country’s high-end shipbuilding industry continues to gain momentum. A number of independently developed, world-leading new cargo vessels—including multi-purpose heavy-lift ships, methanol dual-fuel ore carriers, and clean-energy transport vessels—have entered the stages of construction, sea trials, or delivery. This progress underscores my country’s robust capabilities in advancing the high-end, intelligent, and green transformation of its shipbuilding sector, further driving the growth of its global market share. Recently, the launch of two major high-end shipbuilding projects has provided a powerful impetus for the upgrading of my country’s maritime equipment industry.
On September 28, construction officially began at the Taizhou Kouan Shipbuilding yard on the first of a new class of 60,000-ton, forward-bridge multi-purpose heavy-lift vessels for Chipolbrok (Chinese-Polish Joint Stock Shipping Company). Representatives from all parties involved attended the commencement ceremony, marking a new milestone in the domestic construction of large-scale, specialized heavy-lift ships. Custom-developed for Chipolbrok, this new generation of high-end, multi-purpose vessels features an industry-leading forward-bridge design. Compared to traditional vessel configurations, this design offers a broader operational field of view, superior maneuverability, and increased cargo space—making it ideally suited for transporting oversized and heavy items, such as large-scale industrial equipment, specialized steel products, wind power components, and engineering structures.
According to the project lead, these 60,000-ton heavy-lift vessels incorporate a range of proprietary core technologies. Their structural strength, lifting capacity, and navigational stability all meet advanced international standards, enabling them to operate in complex maritime environments worldwide and handle the loading and unloading of specialized cargo. The vessels utilize an energy-efficient hull design paired with a high-efficiency propulsion system, resulting in energy consumption metrics that outperform similar international vessels—offering both economic and environmental advantages. Once completed and put into service, these ships will primarily support global project logistics and specialized freight routes, effectively addressing the domestic capacity gap for high-end heavy-lift vessels and enhancing the core competitiveness of my country’s specialized shipping sector.

Prior to this, the *Yuanhai Silu*—the world’s first very large ore carrier (VLOC) featuring both a methanol dual-fuel propulsion system and a fully digital delivery process—successfully completed its sea trials. Having met all performance benchmarks, the vessel is now set to enter commercial operation. Designed and built domestically, the ship integrates methanol dual-fuel technology with a comprehensive digital delivery framework, effectively addressing long-standing industry challenges such as high energy consumption, excessive emissions, and complex operational maintenance. Its methanol dual-fuel system allows for flexible switching between fuel modes, significantly reducing carbon and pollutant emissions—a development that aligns with the global shipping industry’s transition toward a low-carbon future.
Furthermore, the vessel is equipped with a full-lifecycle digital management system, enabling digital traceability across every stage—from design and construction to sea trials, delivery, and ongoing maintenance. It stands as a benchmark for the integrated digital and green transformation of global merchant shipping. Primarily intended for the long-haul transport of bulk commodities like iron ore and coal, the vessel will substantially enhance the efficiency of ocean-going bulk shipping while lowering the carbon footprint of cross-border bulk logistics.
Industry data indicates that my country’s order book for high-end vessels is currently filled through 2030. The proportion of orders for sophisticated ship types—such as very large crude carriers (VLCCs), dual-fuel vessels, smart container ships, and specialized heavy-lift carriers—continues to rise. Thanks to their superior cost-performance ratio, advanced technology, and high quality, Chinese-built vessels remain at the forefront of the global market. As a growing number of these high-end ships are delivered, my country is set to further solidify its position as the world’s leading shipbuilding nation, providing a robust equipment foundation for the high-quality development of the global shipping industry.
